Ghostlight Lab Series Black Lives Matter Solidarity & Action Statement

1 June 2020

The Ghostlight Lab Series was founded with a mission to serve as a “brave space” to engage in social dialogue and to support artists of diverse backgrounds. A partner with CWU’s Central Theatre Ensemble, the Ghostlight Lab Series is in solidarity with black artists and people amid the anti-black violence following the murder of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and too many others.

Black lives matter.

These systems and actions that perpetuate white supremacy and oppression cannot, and should not be tolerated, and the Ghostlight Lab Series is dedicated to dismantling and de-colonizing these systemic injustices.

As an artistic entity and as individual artists, we recognize and strive to dialogue around the systemic oppression and racism that endanger the wellbeing of our black artists, indigenous artists, and all artists of color and their respective communities.

We commit to supporting and uplifting voices of color. We commit to listening to what is needed and taking action to address injustice. We commit to actively reaching out to our community to support voices of color.

We ask white artists and community members to self-examine our biases and our actions, to acknowledge racism and white supremacy in their implicit and explicit forms, and to make intentional change within our communities. If we value great work by Black artists, indigenous artists, and other artists of color, we must also advocate for non-violence and demand just systems be created to protect them.

It is our duty as artists, scholars, educators, colleagues, friends, family, and global citizens to support, encourage, and engage in open, brave conversations around issues of injustice, discrimination, and oppression as well as to support, protect, and amplify diverse voices and people of color.

We will continue our work on individual and company levels to identify moments of injustice, discrimination, racism, and oppression and take actions to illuminate these issues and engage in brave, anti-racist dialogues around them.

An experimental performance space for students and faculty to explore diverse, new, innovative theater productions and perspectives which focus on building community collaborations, amplifying diverse artists' voices, and engaging in social justice through performance.
